On this episode of Thursday Night Tailgate our guests are: AT&T Sports Net Pittsburgh Host Paul Alexander, former Patriots Pro Bowl RB Tony Collins, former Bengals LB Ricardo McDonald, former Pirates, Rangers, & Expos OF/1B Al Oliver, and former Broncos RB Olandis Gary.
Paul Alexander shares his observations from Steelers training camp, tells us the Patriots won't be a factor this season plus his memories of Al Oliver and the 1970's Pirates.
Tony Collins shares more of is training camps memories and guys fearing the late evening knock on the door from the Turk and the dreaded phrase Coach wants to see you and bring your playbook. He also shared memories of his friend and teammate Mosi Tatupu.
Ricardo McDonald told us how a kid from Jamaica playing cricket, who grew up in New Jersey, learned about this strange game called American Football. We heard about the teams that recuited him in high school and how Pitt won out. He also talked about how disappointed he was that the Steelers didn't draft him and the chip on the shoulder he carried from that into every Steelers vs. Bengals game.
We started out our time with Al Oliver getting his memories of Bruce Kison who passed away a couple of months ago. They co-managed a team at Pirates fantasy camp earlier this year. We heard about his first All-Star game in 1972 and what it was like replacing Hank Aaron in RF during that game. Al also talked about the collusion case again the owners back in 1985 which led to no teams signing him after that season. Al said he wanted to play 3-4 more years and for a guy who was less than 300 hits shy of 3,000 that would have made all the difference on his Hall of Fame bid.
Olandis Gary played his final 2 season of college football at the University of Georgia, so we got his thoughts on their upcoming season. We also talked about his insights on the Broncos and the RBs he grew up emmulating.
